The capillary action in stone draws water upwards through the stone. This leads to damp walls, corners, crawl spaces, basements, etc. Stone walls start acting like a sponge at a relative humidity of 75%. It has been established in situ that the relative humidity in cavities or crawl spaces with aluminium reflection does not exceed 62%. Read more about “Using Isobooster to make your home damp-free”.
Two Amsterdam physicists have researched how it is possible that water (the water molecule) falls apart (evaporates). They ’fired’ infrared light pulses with a wavelength of around 3000 nanometres at liquid water. (Thermal infrared). This wavelength corresponds to a frequency of 1014 Hertz, equal to the vibrational frequency of the hydrogen atoms in the water molecule. They studied the vibrating atoms and saw that this additional vibration energy weakened and eventually broke the bond between the hydrogen and oxygen atoms, thus making the water molecule ‘fall apart’. As long as the vapour is allowed to escape, the air that remains is dry. Dry air insulates twice as well as humid air, leads to a healthier living environment and helps to prevent mould. Read more on “How does Isobooster work?”
Materials that contain less moisture conduct less heat. Empirical research has shown that molecules in stone, concrete and wood conduct heat slowly and even store it, improving the lambda value by a factor of 10. Stone, plaster and wood are excellent heat storage batteries (even 1770x better than air) and subsequently pass that heat on or give it back it in the form of radiant heat.
In the early 20th century, physicist Henri Coandă discovered that hot, rising air always moves upwards along surfaces (e.g. cold outer walls): The Coandă effect. The Coandă effect, also known as the ceiling effect, is the mechanism whereby air flowing along the wall creates low pressure, making the rising air stick to the wall. Isobooster insulation foil reflects the heat radiation, sending it back into the room at almost the same intensity, simply reusing the heat that would otherwise have been lost.
Although still relatively unknown, the way metals behave when confronted with heat rays has been known for a long time. Indeed, one of the first articles recommending aluminium as an insulation material dates back to 1910.
